ILS - Minimum Runway Requirements
 

I am interested to know whether it is possible that an ILS can be installed on a short narrow runway...I'm talking 1200m and 20m wide? I know that LCY has an ILS but the runway there is wider. Can any one explain in a rather succint way what the minimum criteria needs be for an ILS installationin terms of runway and taxiway dimensions? Also any differences in resoect of minimum dimensions between difference categories of ILS?

Not absolutely certain about this one but you should be able to look up the requirements in one of the ICAO documents; the one on aerodrome standards would probaby be right but I cannor remember its number. There may also be something in ICAO4444, the ATC document.

Nothing to stop you installing ILS on any runway, but to use it as a precision landing aid, many criteria would have to be fulfilled eg runway strip (cleared and graded) 300m, obstacle free zone within the strip 75m, requisite approach and runway lighting, survey of all obstacles to determine glidepath angle, clear flat area in front of the glidepath aerial to enable the glidepath beam to be formed and many more.

The ICAO annex you need is Annex 14 'Licencing of Aerodromes'. The UK CAP 168 is broadly similar and available on-line, unlike ICAO documents. Why oh why don't ICAO make their documents officially available on-line? Surely the relatively small amount of revenue generated by selling paper docs isn't balanced by the reduction in safety because not enough people get to see the docs. Even the UK CAA make all their publications available on-line for no cost to the down-loader.

There ARE sites around the world that make some ICAO docs available, but these are 'unofficial' and don't guarantee the current edition.

The width of a precision approach runway should be not less than 30 m where the code number is 1 or 2. Code 2 length 800-1200m

Thanks guys for the info. Got CAP168 to peruse at my leisure. Just out of interest are there any airports anywhere in the world where there is an ILS approach in place which falls outside these minima? i.e. Code 2 runway minimum width 30m....
