Here my last stupid question ,
are Rafts required for Etops flights ?
I know that a/c like 767 or 330 are equipped with, but for example , it is legal to fly , lets say an A320 or A319 , across the atlantic with only escape slide ?

No! - An ETOPS flight can go across land and qualify for ETOPS times from an approved landing site.

Life Rafts are required for Over-Water Ops where the distance to Shore/Land is more than 100 Miles (or is it Nautical Miles?) Whatever, the difference is Distance over Water, not Single-Engine Flight-Times to a Landing Site.

Many companies find it easier to fit additional rafts for ETOPS as a convenient company standard as many of their Ops are, coincidentally, across the big Oceans - But, according to ETOPS Rules:

RAFTS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR "ETOPS".

hi there,
as I recall: As long as an a/c is fitted with escape slide which double as rafts and if half the number of slides fitted can accomedate all the pax (assuming that only half the exits are usable). you dont need a raft. ETOPS does not figure in this. however its required on flights that are more than 1 hr flying time in still air from land (not necessarily an airfield):rolleyes:

According to JAR-OPS

An aircraft with 2 or more engines flying over water away from land, 120 minutes in cruise speed or 400 nautical miles (witchever is less) requires life rafts and 2 emergency locator transmitters.

There should be enough rafts so if one would fail (with largest capacity) the other ones can accomodate all the passengers.

ex) if 50 passangers are travelling you need 3 rafts with the capacity of 25 persons.



For one engine aircrafts the reqirement is 30 minutes in cruise flight and 100NM


For ETOPS operation I am note sure if it is any different requirement.

Correct on all points. Slightly off the topic, many NON-ETOPS folks are often confused about this.

Basically, ETOPS is an ICAO rule that permits twin engine commercial air transports to fly routes that are farther than a 60 minute distance from an adequate and suitable diversion airport.

Because ETOPS is sometimes (Humourously) referred to as “Engine Turn Or Passengers Swim”, many NON-ETOPS folks have been lead to believe that it applies to trans-ocean operations only, when in fact, it does not.

Interestingly, ICAO is considering replacing ETOPS with a newer system, referred to as LROPS (Long Range Performance Standards), which will affect all aircraft, not only twin engine types.
