B757 B737 fuel consumption short sectors

Greetings,
We're doing a conparison between Airplanes and Trains, and need to find the energy consumption of jet aircraft on sectors of 300, 400, 500 Km.
First would a 757 do a sector this short? Say like EGLL to EGPH. My guess is that a 737 would do this.
We can use the the amount of fuel required for such sectors and convert it to MegaJoule using the Calorific value of Kerosene.
Thank you in advance.

first of all to say that I work in Italy
In here we are doing quite a lot of flights so short (probably more in the 500km range than in the shorter ones).
as you can imagine most of the fuel is burnt for takeoff so despite the distance a 737 would need just over a ton just to reach a "low" (eg. 27000') cruising level.
Personally I am flying a Turin-Rome FCO sector every day and the typical fuel burn for a sector like this is 2400KG. (probably up to 2600 if full in a no wind condition)
Alitalia is flying sometimes these routes with A321 which is about the same size of a 757 but no clou on how much they burn.
Hope to be of help.

An A300 with 270 pax needs about 5.000 kg for a 500 km sector.

The answer is that any aircraft will fly any length of sector subject to (a) pax demand (they use 747's on Japanese domestic sectors) (a) opeational requirements (BA have use 747's, 777's, Tristars on CDG in the past).

EGLL-EGPF [PH=Posh Houses=EDI, PF=p0xy flats=GLA, PD=pretty dull=ABZ] is about 600km, whereas EGCC=MAN is about 300km.

A 737/320 will burn about 10kg/nm so about 1600kg on a LHR-MAN sector - I would guess a 757 would burn about 14kg/nm, so 40% more at 2200-2300kg.

You do the maths fot the longer sector.

[The 737-400 may burn 10% more than the 320].

For what its worth, a B757 with a (full) ZFW of 80000kg will require about 7000kg on a 2 hour short sector, about 11000 on 3 hours. I guess one hour would be 3500kg. Empty is much less, but she does really slurp the gas any time below FL250. Still a great aeroplane to fly, though!!

Thank you...

...you have been most helpful.

TopBunk, what kind of typical pax loads go with your numbers?

It's funny you should mention that. I have noticed that BA sometimes uses a Boeing 767ER for their Heathrow to Prague runs. Such a big aircraft for a relative short distance seems a bit over kill to me.

As has been mentioned it depends on what is required commercially. Popular routes may need larger capacity aircraft even if they are operating flights far shorter than their possible range. BA also use 767's on Barcelona.

Where possible...76's are used on routes where freight is a big possibility....

Lets not get side tracked please...

Thank you.

Your turn...

So how many MJs does a typical express train use on a 300/500m run?

Well for that probably not much ~31,5 MJ :}

For a 500 Km run ~31,500 MJ
