TCM starter adaptor slipping?

Hi all,

First time I have ventured into these parts of the forums and I wich I found them sooner! Great lot of info available.

Now I have a question that hopefully somebody can clear up-

I currently fly a C182Q (TCM O-470) for my NVFR training and when engaging the starter the prop always has difficulty in getting through the first 2 complete rotations. Initially the prop (2-blade) will turn 180degrees fairly easily, then slow down enough to stop for an instant, turn again 180degrees stop for an instant again and then fire on the thrid rotation. This happens during every start-hot or cold.

Now I also fly a Beech Debonair C33 fitted with an IO-470 and a 3 blade prop, and when engaging the starter in this aircraft the bladed continuously rotate until the engine catches.

I was recently reading an article in our national Flight Safety magazine about a starter adaptor slipping on a TCM IO-520 and wondered if this is happening on the C182 that I hire?

Cheers

Yup, sure is. tell the owner(if you are hiring) before he/she ends up with an engine full of metal.
It is sometimes helpful to move the prop back to the end of the firing stroke so the whole show has a bit of momentum when it gets to the next compression stroke. Do not hold the stater on if the prop is not turning or you will get metal very quickly.
hope this helps.

Thanks mate, thought it might have been, but the stop is literally only for an instant, and the fact that it occurred EVERY start lead me to believe it wasn't a bad battery.

Is the fix so expensive that when I mention it I will get laughed away?!

It is all relative. $500-$1000 AUD will probably fix it. not sure what an exchange unit is worth at present. I think there is better spring setup available, than the standard Conty. Cheaper than tearing down an engine and replacing bearings etc.
