IRS inflight alignment??
 
It was my understanding that IRS/INS's are to be aligned on the ground with the aircraft parked. I was told these days that IRS's are capable of inflight alignment with the use of GPS, and useable for navigational purposes after.

I know that the IRS's can be realgined in flight to recover the attitude indicator but without navigational capabilities.

Can anyone help me out and explain if newer aircraft have this capability??

According to specs, Honeywell Laseref V is capable of full realignment (not just update) in flight with GPS aiding. Will also align on ground without pilot action to enter initial position provided it has a valid GPS input.. Note that at least one FMS manufacturer will still require position initialisation in case of GPS spoofing.

aligment.

No MCP for the IRS everything is automatic. even has an APM that remembers aircraft tray alignment info so whenyou swap boxes the new on reads the data and knows if the tray isn't level. And as stated no technical reason to input initial position.
