WGS84 Standard
Would anybody know of a URL that contains information as to whether a country is compliant with WGS84 standard? I am thinking strictly in terms of aviation applications here.
TIA for any information provided. |

The whole world has been mapped to WGS84 standard. It was done to facilitate GPS. As the US military use it to guide their bombs and as no-one knows who GWB is going to declare as an 'axis of evil' as part of his 'war on terror', I suppose they thought they'd better include everyone!
BTW, have a look at Google Earth - it's brilliant! |
WGS84 Compliance? As someone posted here not too long ago, when his GPS was reporting him at the geographic coordinates for Southend airport he found he was a not inconsiderable distance away at Southend Pier. (The pier was still intact at the time) The maps were not WGS84 compliant. That's one reason why caution is necessary when using GPS.

... well, to be fair, it wasn't actually a GPS problem...

Perhaps not, but he was still "temporarily unsure of his position"! ;)

The discrepancy was what-- miles? If so, that's much too large to be explained by the shift from the old mapping datum to WGS84. |
