B737 Start Lever To Idle
 
Two philosophies for an engine start:

1) Opening quickly.

2) Opening very slowly.


Those who opt for the second say it avoids the sudden shock to the turbine, or something similar, while the others say you need to "break" in with fuel to avoid a hot start... or something like that.

Any views on that?

does not make much of a difference but you do seem to get a kick back if you move the start lever to idle fast. i recommend slowly to be safe

On the 737NG (600/700/800/900/BBJ) the start levers are no more than ON/OFF electrical switches. On the NG there is no mechanical connection between the start lever and the engine. The rate at which you move the start lever on the NG makes no difference to anything.
