Md83 Fuel Consumption

Does anyone know what the fuel usage is for the MD83, for example 1700nm + reserves. How much fuel would have to be carried?

I believe the -88 burns around 13.35Ibs/NM. A ballpark figure for the -83

A quick (and simplified) calculation:

- Taxi fuel is normally 200 kgs.
- A rough cruising Fuel Flow figure for MD-80s is 2800 kgs/h. Let's assume GS 450KTS approximately (close enough). So it will burn on 1700 NM trip about 10600 kgs.
- Contingency fuel (5% of trip fuel) will be ~500 kgs.
- Fuel required for destination alternate varies but let's assume in this calculation for example 1500 kgs.
- Final reserve is (for 30 min) about 1400 kgs. All of the above summed will be: 14200 kgs.
- If additional fuel is required or commander decides to take some extra the total sum will be obviously higher.
(Calculation above assumes zero wind.)

So, roughly about 15000 kgs of fuel or 33000 lbs.

The total amount of fuel which can be carried on an MD83 varies with the version. I (no aux tank) 17740kg, II (forward aux tank) 19960kg, III (forward and aft aux tank) 21160kg. At maximum zero fuel weight (55.3t) you can take 17.2t of fuel up to maximum takeoff weight (72.5t) which is equal to a range of just about 1700 to 2000nm.
