World's Busiest Airport

For those people who had to read the usual journalistic trash in Metro(London's free morning paper)about Heathrow being the world's busiest airport, here is the correct list.
I've no idea how it's going to look because Danny won't give us a preview facility like decent sites do.

1 Hartsfield International Airport ATL Atlanta, Georgia 77,939,536
2 Chicago-O'Hare International Airport ORD Chicago, Illinois 72,568,076
3 Los Angeles International Airport LAX Los Angeles, California 63,876,561
4 Heathrow Airport LHR London, United Kingdom 62,263,710
5 DFW International Airport DFW Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas 60,000,125
6 Haneda Airport HND Tokyo, Japan 54,338,212
7 Frankfurt Airport FRA Frankfurt, Germany 45,858,315
8 Roissy-Charles de Gaulle CDG Paris, France 43,596,943
9 San Francisco International Airport SFO San Francisco, California 40,387,422

19 George Bush Intercontinental Airport IAH Houston, Texas 33,089,333
20 John F. Kennedy International Airport JFK New York, New York 32,003,000

ps Why don't 'journalists' do us all a favour and become tube drivers?

DownIn3Green 22nd Mar 2001 13:45

What do you mean?...I think this is a very "decent" site.

Heathrow is the busiest international airport.

A bit of a swizz, really, when you remember that a three hour sector out of your average US airport could easily still be domestic.

RATBOY 22nd Mar 2001 18:29

And ATL,ORD and LAX aren't international airports?

Besides, you are ordering by passenger count, which is a perfectly fine way to "rank" things in many ways. More appropriate for the pilot and ATCOs is the number of operations. Problem with this measure is it only counts airports that have control towers to control aircraft ops. I've got to believe there are some untowered airports that have more operations, even if it is "only" C-150's doing touch and gos.

I think "busiest international airport" means "most international passengers".

I seem to recall that in the U.K. the 3rd or 4th busiest airport is Oxfords, with PA28s and PA34s!! though some people might not find that to hard to believe except that most traffic movements are between 0600 and 1900...

I think Van Nuys in L.A. is the busiest "general aviation" airport, at least in the U.S., and it has a control tower.

By the way, I still think this is a pretty decent site...Thanks, Danny.

I believe that, for a few days each year, Oshkosh is the busiest airport in the world. Something like 14000 fly-ins for the airshow....and the controllers are all volunteers for the week. Well done to them all.

foghorn 23rd Mar 2001 14:01

Yep, for the same reasons Cranfield is the busiest airspace in Europe around the time of the PFA rally...

I've been told that on the day of British GP, Silverstone is the busiest in the world. Having seen it, I could well believe it. Spacing for the post race departure I'd put at around 10 seconds or less!!

Can anybody extend this list? To 30 busiest maybe? Thanks in advance.

I agree with DownIn3Green, I was flying out of Van Nuys (KVNY) in November last year and they told me it was the 3rd buisiest in the US if you count take offs and landings. Thats pretty high considering general aviation.

Changing the goalposts slightly but is
Gatwick the busiest single Rwy 'International' airport ?
