any feedback on merits of Trent vs GE90 B777?
 
Would be interested in operational experience of any fellow ppruners who have time on both GE90 and Trent.

I'm not a fan, no pun intended, of the offerings from GE.

Having operated the GE for some time the Roller requires a little re-education. The throttles during taxy are very sensitive. 2-3 mm of movement can increase the N1 by 10-15%. Also setting the throttles to the "stand up" position on the Roller will give you about 80% N1 compared with 55% on the GE. The differences mentioned above, together with others ned careful handling!

The RR engine is not so sensitive...
In fact from idle, it needs quite a nudge to increase the N1, the first 2-3mm would make very small difference (you don't even see the fuel flow increases).
As for merits of the RR, it is a great engine to fly but most RR engine failures so far have been associated with the gearbox and accesories. Have not heard any trouble on the GE so far.
Was also told that the GE weights about 8000lbs more than RR, so a higher zfw. But it burns less fuel than RR !

Three shafts are best, each rotor turns at its optimum speed, more fuel efficient, generally quieter, but are heavier. Somewhat of a compromise, as in all aviation..... except of course that "The Captain is ALWAYS right." Ah, those were the days! :)
