A320 SLAT/FLAP LOCKED PROCEDURE

When determining the maximum speed or approach speed we have a check a table and identify the actual flap / slat position. Both the table for maximum speed and approach speed have an option for Slats > 3. However Slats at the 3 index indicates maximum slat deflection ( I.e CONF Full ). Any ideas why ? Is their a possibility of slats extending beyond the maximum position with this type of fault?

Also I noticed today that when selecting Flap Full for landing, during slat surface movement from position 2 to 3, A fourth index momentarily displayed and then disappeared when slat surfaced reached fully deflected position. Never noticed that before?

No.
It is the naming of slats and flaps positions which can cause confusion. Slats>3 is the normal slat position when the Flap handle is at Full.
5 Flap positions labeled 0 to 4:
4 Slat positions labeled with respect to the flap handle position (doh!)

Thnakyou. So when Airbus show Flap > 3 they are referring to greater than 15 deg? As the flap position indexes refer to 0, 10, 15, 20 and 35 deg? And Slat position index’s refer to 0, 18, 22 and 27? ( Slat > 3 being greater than 22 deg ).

The confusing thing is the limit speeds correspond to flap/slat settings, however if we consider slat/flap position 0 as the first index then the speeds don’t match our published limitations ( they are one CONF position different if that makes sense?)

No.
Flap>3 = >20 degs
Slat > 3 being greater than 22 deg

So basically they are referring to the surface position regarding the handle (conf 1, 1+f, 2, 3 full), not individual surface movement between their respective "pegs"
