Back course localiser approach in Europe?

Is there a published Back course localiser approach in Europe or is this mainly an American/Canadian thing?

Not sure if only found in US/Canada, but not in JAA country. I don't have a reference for you though.

I kind of miss flying them Used to the one in Monterey a lot, when the marine layer came in...

Are they approved at most US airlines? Or is it mainly GA guys who fly them?

Cheers

P

FWIW, I think there's a back course or two on either Iceland or Greenland.

Never seen a BC Approach outside of North America.
Nothing wrong with them...
Do not forget to dial the "front course" on the HSI.
If you fly to the US/Canada, better review how to fly the back course.

Fortunately most modern FMS systems figure out whether it is back course or front course for you. No inputs or figuring out required.

I've been offered radar vectors to a back course at Brussels National. Like other British Operators, I had to decline as we're not trained for so not allowed to fly them. All the other inbounds accepted them so they must be OK for them

Not been for a while but Chambery in France uses the back course localiser as part of the go around if that counts

Interesting. The AIP annotates all ILS at EBBR as

"No back beam AVBL. LLZ only reliable within 35° either side of course line."

It was quite a while ago onto the southerly runway due WIP, as I remember. It's possible that the front course was out of service.

Back course EBBR ???

Something does not "click" in my old (former Belgian) mind here...
Being cleared for a back course to runway 07R...?
No such animal ever existed. Sure, you can land visually on 07R...
Sure, there is the ILS for 25L... Most common landing runway in BRU.
But you would never be cleared (by ATC) to use the back course.
No guarantee that if you tune LOC 25L, that the HSI will show anything reliable.
You can try, if unlimited CAVOK, to see "if it works"...
Or get a DME reading... To my opinion, BUB VOR 114.6 is better for runway 07R/25L.

Or maybe was April Fools Day...?

If the front course is "out of service", I think the "back course" will be out to lunch too.

back crs loc

Hi,

You are both correct concerning EBBR.
In the past, there is a back loc approach that had been published on rwy20. Nevertheless, after new equipment installation, the rwy 20 is equipped with an ILS (as rwy 25's and 02).
Rwy 07's are served by VOR approaches only.
Rwy 20 and 07's approaches are seldom (statistically).
Greetings,

Gander aids

Does anybody know what is going on with the backcourses in Gander?Last time I went there the backcourse on 31 was no longer shown in the Jepp charts and the ILS and BC on 03/21 were out of service.

NavCanada is currently replacing several old ILS systems. The with new systems do not have a BC component.

Not sure if this is what is going on in Gander but the replacement of a single ILS has taken up to three months so if they are replacing the one on 03/21 that would explain the NOTAM.
