what's the purpose of taxi light's "auto" function?

i noticed that the taxi light switch in 737ng had 2 positions---OFF & "AUTO", i'm wondering what is the purpose for this "AUTO"? automatically turn off after nose gear retracted?

Yes, it will switch off automatically with gear retraction.
