What are the odds
What are the odds of all ten tires blowing at once on a 744 main gear? Me thinks there was something on the runway and since it was in Pakistan it was prolly done on purpose.
Major tragedy averted, Islamabad airport closed Hindu (India) 07/20/03 Copyright (C) 2001 Kasturi & Sons Ltd (KSL); Source: World Reporter (TM) - Asia Intelligence Wire Islamabad, July 20. (PTI): All 276 passengers on board a New York bound Pakistan International Airlines flight had a miraculous escape today when all the ten tires of the Boeing 747 burst on takeoff, an airport official said. "All 10 tyres of the plane PK-717 burst when it was about to takeoff for New York. The 276 passengers on board, including eight children and 19 crew members, are safe," the official said. The international airport has been shut down as the runway has been blocked and all flights to and from Islamabad have been temporarily suspended. The flight arrived today morning from Karachi to Islamabad for onward journey to New York. The airport is likely to open later in the day and the New York flight is expected to resume in the afternoon. :ok: |
Well, for start, a 744 has 18 wheels, 2 nose and 4x4 main gear wheels. Only the 16 main gear wheels are braked.
|
More like the aircraft rejected the take off and 12 of the 18 main wheel tyres simply deflated (as they are designed to do)
|
Yes, posts elsewhere and wire reports say RTO after engine failure. No spare tyres (or not enough) at Islamabad so the airplane could not be moved until more were brought in.

I wasn't aware PIA operated B744s!

Actually Mutt, When I posted this I thought the aircraft took off. I didn't know he was slamming on the brakes.

In early 1976 we managed to burst (yes burst) 14 tyres on the last 747-100 to be made (G-BDPV), during a test flight at Seattle. Made a right mess of the Everett runway.

Heard a story once about someone filming a 747 taxiing and they had to do repeated takes. In the end, they thermalled the wheels and got stuck. The article said there was a max taxi distance and after that you'd have to stay still a while for everything to cool off. Is that true?
