Boeing 777 223ER with winglets
Spotted over Gloucestershire on the climb-out of Heathrow. AAL87 with zip-tips!
Thought the design of the wing on the triple 7 precluded the need for zip-tips? BTW you didn't need binoculars to spot them either. At 20000ft they stood out like.....well like big winglets! The last photo of this particular aircraft on a well known site was September where it is depicted sans tips. Must have been a recent addition. |
Are you sure it wasn't a 767?
|
That's what I thought until I checked the details on the SBS.
Also, with the naked eye the wingspan seemed very accentuated, (whatever that means).:hmm: |
Either your SBS is wrong or it is your eyesight.
The 777 does NOT have winglets - raked wingtips do it better! |

They've been mooted for a while, but pretty sure that no 777 has taken the air with them yet.
There would definitely be pictures online if one had. |
Interesting article PaperTiger.
I live a little offset from directly under UL9 and Heathrow out-bounds, and their 'enhancements,' are clearly discernible WITHOUT magnification aids. ANY A/C fitted with zip-tips, (not fence-tips), are identifiable and something as big as a 777 with said fitted would be clearly visible even at cruising altitude. On review, however, the tail fin was 'thicker' at the bottom leading me to the conclusion that the 'equipment' must have been substituted for flight AAL87. The SBS interprets the actual A/C and it's unique data so it's an enigma why it displayed the A/C type as a 777. |
Copy that AircraftOprerations. I have Googled it and nowt has shown up.
|
FWIW both flightaware.com and flightstats.com show AA87 as a 777 on Oct 6th (and every other day).

The Heathrow Movements website
lhr oct 2010 gives AAL87 as being N752AN on 7th October. A quick google gives this picture : Photos: Boeing 777-223/ER Aircraft Pictures | !!!!!!!!!!!!!! taken on Sept 19th which clearly shows no winglets. libhomeradar - easy collect aircraft information - libhomeradar - easy collect aircraft information shows contacts on virtually all dates between. It can therefore be concluded that N752AN does NOT have winglets fitted :) MD |
