Virus alert.
 

I know this isn't the computer forum but not many go there.
Today I was hit by the Win32.Mtx virus. It came on an attachment on an email.
The attachment read "I_wanna_see_YOU.TXT.pif"

Rather annoyed. :mad:

Sounds like it could be a variant of the Sonic worm virus. Copies itself into your system regisrty; the text portion is actually a relay to find the latest version of the virus from geocities.
I highly recommend frequent pit stops to http://www.zdnet.com for the latest in virus protection.

Surely you didn't run the attachment - especially with a ".pif" at the end???

I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I'm pretty careful about running anything, even from "trusted" correspondants - it's amazing how many times I get sent emails that McAfee doesn't like, from people who didn't know they were infected.

You were suckered by the apparent double suffix. If you have your Windows set not to show file extensions (suffixes) any that appear like xxxxx.txt have a hidden extension and show be considered extremely dodgy.

The latest virus doing the round comes with several attachments of various names; it gets in to your address book and sends mail with no subject line to everyone. Try this link for a fix http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.mtx.html

Thanks for the advice people. I have now got it sorted out. The av programme I had didn't grab it so I have a new one from www.cai.com. (basicly a free VET av programme)
The email and the attachment came from some one I had trusted before. Oh well. I learnt something! :)

Virii always come from someone you know. Computer virii also come from someone you know. The more you trust someone/exchange email with someone, the more likely they are to send you a virus without them knowing. The rule to follow is NEVER open an attachment which has a suffix which runs a micro$oft program (.pif, .exe, .vbs, etc. etc. etc.) Make bloody sure that you have windoze set up to show you the whole filename of attachments.
