Murky Bucket
Having not travelled far before starting in this business, could I ask some of the more seasoned crew about greetings.
I have recently spoken to a spanish friend about the use a Buenos Tardes/Asdias (hope the spelling is ok!!!). Apparently it changes around seista time (1400-1500). What's good morning to Maastrict for example (...I know that there is a large proportion of other nationalities working there too) Just seems to show a little respect for their culture that's all. Hope you can help |
"Salaam Aleykum" (God's/Allah's Peace be with you) if you get out to this neck of the woods.
The reply is "Aleykum Salaam" (and then it usually runs on to another 5 minutes of reciprocal greetings that we can't understand until you finally get down to whatever you really wanted to talk about!) Another useful phrase if you want to get past somebody blocking the Duty-free aisle is pronounced "aafwoon" - "Excuse me" (as near as I can get it in phonetics), which also doubles as "sorry" if you bump into someone, and "your welcome" (versatile word!) as a reply to "thank you" "Thank You" is "Shukren" (roll the "r" if you can, for authenticity) ExSimGuy's Guide to Arabic for Complete Walleys is available from W.H.Smiths, and all good bookstores :) ;) :) ------------------ What goes around . . . . . often lands better! |
