Hooked on Gann
 

I recently had the pleasure of reading E.Gann's Fate is the Hunter, I would highly recomend it to anyone who hasn't read it.
I have been told that 'The High and the Mighty' is another of his great novels, but I can not seem to find it any where, I've been to all the book shops (out of print), internet (no luck), friends (dont have any).

If any one knows where I can get a copy of The High and the Mighty please let me know I would be most grateful.

Ditto on "Fate is the Hunter" - great book. Try Gann's "Black Watch" about U-2 pilots.

There was a film version of "High and the Mighty" starring John Wayne made back in the 40-50's I think. Terrific movie. Great story line, great suspense, but no profanity, sex, or gratuitous violence, so those whose IQ is room temperature will not like it.

Sadly, the High and the Mighty is about the only John Wayne film NOT on video.

Been hoping to see it for years!

Most people agree about FitH including me. Several of the other books are also very readable but if you want to cure your addiction just try - A Hostage to Fortune - the autobigraphy, it takes a while but then you realise "Aren`t ya just sick of `im?"

just use http://www.bibliofind.com/ and search for Gann - they are all there including copies of The High and the Mighty. My limited experience of book dealers on this site is extremely good.

The subject of Fate Is The Hunter has occupied several threads during the life of PPRuNe, scarebus. For many of us it is regarded as one of the Bibles of aviation. It is one of the few books which can be re-read over the years without being any the less captivating. If you carry out a thread search, you will probably find a number of helpful suggestions on finding Hostage.., which is now hard to obtain. Tremendous handle. Gary! Shows your (our) age! Compulsive viewing for us budding aviators during early school days. I am surprised, however, at your reaction to Hostage... I found it highly enlightening to read an insight into what really made up the man who was able so completely to describe the aviation environment and its personalities.

All the personal accounts I have heard or read from those who met "Ernie" have suggested that he was a very personable human being who had a rich and varied life. He appears to have inspired much affection. As one who owns all but two of his books, I shall forever regret that I never had the opportunity to meet him.

Have to agree entirely with the comments here. Ernie Gann was a superb author, and lived a very full and adventurous life.

I thought that Hostage to Fortune was an excellent book, and is in fact the ultimate Aviation Wannabee story. An individual who has already succeeded in one career, getting bitten by the Aviation bug and chasing it around the world, from the bottom up!

I seem to remember reading something like "Ernest Ganns Flying Circus" in addition to everything mentioned already. It may or may not have been a collection of magazine articles (Flying perhaps?) A good read anyway
