So called "Aviation Experts"
 

OK I'm sure this is a perennial subject, but Chris "Aviation Expert" Yates' performance on News 24 again brings home the need for an ex-AAIB investigator or someone with some aircraft nouse to make themselves available for the 24 hour media in times of accidents to quickly set out the procedures being followed and what is or is not conjecture.

Totally agree with the sentiment regarding Chris "Erm" Yates.

Surely by know, both the BBC and Sky must have realised that he erm knows erm nothing erm and erm bluffs his erm way through erm every erm interview.

He has erm excelled erm himself with erm the three recent aviation erm events.

Actually make that four, becuase I've just remembered his bu**!!!!! commentary when the first SQ A380 was on finals to EGLL.

Wonder how large his consultancy bill to each channel is?

Was it last night on the Beeb that he said the reported tail-down attitude of the C500 at EGKB was an attempt by the crew to gain speed??

Well, Pprune is the ''home'' of the armchair experts, but I'm sure it doesn't stop you from viewing these forums on a regular basis.

Sometimes I watch BBC coverage for some semblance of normality after spending over 8 years trawling these forums for a half decent opinion that hasn't been concocted by some 15 year old with several thousand hours on pixellated jets.

Surely you're asking for trouble with either / or. . . ??

Wouldn't you love to be involved in the selection process?!!!! Would be either the funniest or most maddening experience ever! Although thinking about it, given the muppets they do drag out, there can't be a process! Cheapest?:D

Yates,moody, experts no, but they do give you a laugh with their lack of knowlege.

I thought Capt. Moody knew a thing or three?

I know what its like to be an "aviation expert".

1. you don't get paid.

2. you are often edited in time or content in one way or another. sometimes your words are taken out of context.

3. you are asked to come up with reasons without even seeing a picture of a plane that has gone down.

4. I've seen other experts with credentials like NTSB etc...when they are on tv their stock in trade answer is: its too soon to tell. it would be irresponsible to speculate. Even when video is available of a wing falling off the plane they won't speculate on "structural failure".

Anyone on this forum with an ATP, maybe 10,000 hours plus or minus would easily qualify as an "expert". If you want to be an expert, just contact your favorite media outlet and offer your services.

You might be able to get something good out that will change things for the positive. You might not.

You might even be shot down here on this forum!

He was spot on with the Helios tragedy despite much derision from self appointed experts on this forum.

David Learmount is a thoroughly decent chap as well being extremely knowledgeable about all things aviation.

Does Paul Beaver still appear anywhere?

I liked how Yates called 'John' the pilot another 'highly trained professional' even though by his own admission 'John' the pilot flew once a month from Biggin (most likely therefore, on a PPL) But yeah he was hamming it all up a bit too much given the situation:yuk: I don't even see the need for some 'experts' soundbites, the news presenters were practially answering their own questions anyway. And did anyone see the little girl who said she saw the pax waving at her to get out of the way? To which the the reporter asked her "you mean the pilot from the cockpit?!?" For god's sake BBC, this is a childs imagination, not news!
