Noise from the cockpit

Sitting towards the front of passenger planes such as an RJ or A319, I have often heard beeping from the cockpit. This is usually three short beeps which are heard as the descent towards the airfield is being made. What are these beeps? Is this the outer marker or is it something else - like a stall warning perhaps?

You like your noises Johnny! This is very very unlikely to be a stall warning or anything so dramatic if you have heard it more than once. Beeps could be a marker, although they are becoming rare on approaches. The most likely answer will be the pilots have set the alarm clock to wake them up for landing............

It certainly sounds like the stall warning. Can you hear other noises like 'pull up' and 'terrain'?

Or maybe 'muullllaaawaallaaammuullaaaaaaaa!'?

I would imagine it's the autopilot disconnect as they fly a manual approach.

need to know

Many people who possess MS Flight Sim are already skilled at recognising noises such as stall warning, trim motors, markers etc. Manufacturers are aware that those who sit forrard can hear these noises and perhaps be alarmed. So at the instigation of IATA manufacturers have heeded the advice to be discreet about noises and the possibility of alarming passengers. No more disturbing noises then. Except if something really bad happens that is life threatening. The computers then emit three short beeps....

its the autopilot disconnecting

Bicster 26th March 2008 17:27

Yep its the autopilot disconnecting

wegi 27th March 2008 13:49

It's probably A/P and (or) A/T disengage sound.

Can I say it too please.

It's the Autopilot disconnect warning. It sounds even if the A/P disc button is pressed to intentionally disconnect the A/P just in case the press is inadvertant - which it can be. Something slides off the table onto the sidestick - it happens sometimes!

In a Boeing, you'd hear something like this..

Classic Nokia text message rec tone :}

Atreyu 6th April 2008 11:16

From the LHS it can be "What The F***" But usually it is the autopilot disconnect. And wegi on the RJ there is no tone for A/T disconnect.
