747-400
notice anything unusual about this 747-400? ....
http://eu.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/photos/midd.../7/0472736.jpg |
It's a B747-400D, which Japan Air Lines uses for domestic use only and therefore does not need the winglets.
|
Didn't the 747-300's look the same as the -400 but without the winglets?
|
No. Give us all a clue as the suspence iis killing me !! :D

It's a B747-400D, which Japan Air Lines uses for domestic use only and therefore does not need the winglets I had never realized that version was available untill today .... REF .... 747-300 did indeed look very similar but very different technically to the 400 747-300 info ..... http://www.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/info/stats.main?id=99 |
So how can you tell from the head-on view that it is a -300 or a -400D ? Are the winglets superimposed and if so then why bother?
|
Here's some info on the 400 ......
The 747-400 externally resembles the -300, but it is a significantly improved aircraft. Changes include a new, two crew digital flightdeck with six large CRT displays, an increased span wing with winglets (the -400 was the first airliner to introduce winglets), new engines, recontoured wing/fuselage fairing, a new interior, lower basic but increased max takeoff weights, and greater range. |
hobie. Have I missed something here. The 747 in the photo above does have winglets!
By the way, if a winglet on a 747-400 is damaged and removed, it can still fly with one remaining! |
Strangely I know the difference between a -300 and -400 because I fly the -400s for a living! My question was how can you tell that the photo is a -400D and not a -300 or -400? Why would someone superimpose winglets on a -400D? :8

Interesting. The photo I am looking at in the first post is the same as the one just posted. There must be a problem with my settings. Both photos show a head-on shot of a -400 from !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for that xetroV. All is now revealed! |
Nothing wrong with your settings: !!!!!!!!!!!!!! just doesn't like hotlinking and shows its logo instead. Only hobie can see the pictures as they are still in his browser's cache (you can too if you copy the picture's url and paste it into the address bar of your browser).

Stick this in a new window and close the gap between 0472736 and the .jpg that should give you the direct link. Hope it helps you guys out. Interesting by the way (I didn't know the reason why - but I did notice they were missing). Andrew |
If one has very precisely calibrated eyeballs, the nacelles on the -400 are just a mite bigger in diameter than earlier models - bigger fans!
PS - there are a very few earlier 747 models with the bigger fan. Anyone care to guess? :} |
