TOGA question for 744 drivers

Do you press the TOGA switch once, for THR or twice for THR REF during a go-around?

Dan Winterland 3rd October 2006 04:40

Press them once and you get power for a rate of climb of 2000fpm. Press them again for full TOGA thrust. It's been awhile, but I think you're correct for the FMAs - THR then THR REF.

Any idea which one you normally use?

Dan Winterland 3rd October 2006 15:37

Haven't flown it for about 4 years now, but I seem to remeber that my company's SOPs were to use one push. If you didn't feel comfortable with the rate of climb, push it again.

FLCH-SPD 3rd October 2006 17:57

I guess obstacle clearance probably plays a part.

Intruder 3rd October 2006 18:37

Just one push here. 2000 FPM is a significant climb rate, and plenty if the MAP level-off altitude is only a couple thousand feet up. If you think you need more, push it again later.

One push should always be sufficient for a normal go around - after all you're starting from about 200ft at the touchdown end of the runway and are lighter than at take off. You will be at about 3000' aal at the upwind end vs about 400' on a normal take off!

Windshear etc is a different case of course.
