Sunday 757

Hi Folks,
I'm new posting here so forgive any ignorance. I've been interested in and watching aircraft since I was about three. I now live in Horsley in Surrey near the Okham Beacon and so as you can imagine we get a lot of aircraft overflying us. Last Sunday at about 8.30 ish we had what appeared to be a Boeing 757 overfly us on a heading of approximately 220 degrees. The aircraft appeared to be travelling faster than normal and was making a very harsh roaring noise, much like a Trident or VC10. Almost instantaneously the noise stopped leaving just the usual engine sounds, it didn't sound like the usual throttling back, I've never heard anything like it before and I've listened to many commercial aircraft engines. Can anyone throw any light on this please?

Thank you and sorry if it's a dumb question.

I suspect a rapid deployment of the spoilers / airbrakes to slow the plane down caused the noise.

Or even the flaps/slats going in or out.
