Engine Numbers

When referring to engine numbers on aircraft, from what direction do you count them?

When facing the pointy end, from left to right. :)

Start with Engine number 1 from port side to starboard facing forwards.

I believe "left" and "right" has caused problems in the past....

For example when cabin crew hurriedly tell the captain that they've just seen something fall off the "left engine" - depends which way they were facing when they spotted it.

Pendant mod on.
Port is Port and Starboard Starboard regardless of which way you are facing therefore the furthest engine to port is number one and the furthest to starboard is number four.
Presuming that you are talking about proper Aircraft not the odd two, three and six or even eight engined varients.
Principle still applies.
Pendant mode off.
