747 takeoff roll

http://www.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/open.file/636451/L/

That has got to be an underwear check rolling all the way to the end like that. Does this happen often? :)

Looking at the photo I think that there is a great deal of "dead ground" between the aircraft and the threshold. If the ground falls away between two points, then the distance looks less or closer.
The runway could also be very short!

If you look closely you can see the pile of s**t left by the preceding chap!

BraceBrace 11th August 2004 19:56

This is indeed a visual illusion, same thing you often see in cycling when multiple groups of cyclers on tv are chasing eachother on a long straight road. They appear to be very close when the camera has a similar point of view, although in reality there is a big distance between the groups. You can "see" it when comparing the size of the fences on the right, and the size of the 747... small 747 or big fences?

Looks like a normal overweight Haj flight to me.
Or as we call it here in Jeddah, the standard Rose Village departure.

You are all wrong, this chap was landing..!!!! :D :D

Hay Ewe 11th August 2004 22:14

Yeah, but I was more interested in the the black bird (Crow) just below number 1 engine, Raked wingtips and winglets!!!

Very Clever. With the aeroplane weather-cocked towards the camera (presumably due to a crossie?) it appears like the plane is trying to takeoff/land before it gets to the bank. Check out which direction the runway centerline is heading.

I like cross-wind landing pics.

SilentHandover 12th August 2004 11:03

Defo an optical illusion, I watched the depature featured from the tower and it didn't look that long a roll at all.

Now as for the 'Snowbird' that departed awhile earlier!!!

Capt. J 12th August 2004 11:31

dudduddud, if you like crosswind landings, you will love this photo :)

expedite_climb 12th August 2004 12:18

Dunno, I saw the a/c take off 08R at LGW the other day. Didnt half use some runway !

Dan Winterland 12th August 2004 14:11

Looks about right to me. Took off from DXB this morning at MTOW at 37 degrees C, we used nearly all the 4000m available. Underwear was OK as I had my eyes shut!

1DC 12th August 2004 14:48

Some years ago on a delayed flight out of DXB, departing mid afternoon instead of 0800, the Captain warned the pasengers that the take off would require full runway and seem to take for ever. It did, and the rate of climb afterwards was also very slow. Without the warning i think most passengers would have been very twitchy.
