A321 Flight Deck Stench ?
 

Can anybody explain why the A321 gets all the olifactory outputs from the temporary inhabitants of the forward lavatory ??? :yuk:

I cannot see how this can be certified especially given SARS problems and other airborne diseases; not forgetting the pure disgusting impact on the day's enjoyment !!

Many a poor colleague has experienced sideways looks of horror from me until the 'known' fault was explained ! I may be getting on but the flight deck doesn't have to smell of the fact !

Can anybody offer any information as AIRBUS is apparantly 'aware of' but 'unable to locate' the problem :bored:

Can't answer on the Airbus, but I think everyone should try, at least once...

Transporting 65 'illegal' immigrants, who have been detained for who knows how long without much in the way of soap and water, on a DC4, one lav, 4 1/2 hour flight Jhb to Malawi, middle of summer in Africa and not one barf bag on board...!! :yuk:

If you think the A321 has a problem in this respect then you should do a long charter in a 737 - it's a hundred times worse than the Airbus.

that perhaps explains the fact that Fwd Lav on Thomas Cook Belgian Airlines' Airbus 32X charterflights was being used as 'storage' room and Pax kindly requested to use Aft Lav's only...
From what I could see, CA's used it to stow personal belongings and small lightweight items for cabin service (plastic cups and the like for which they didn't have enough space elsewhere?).
Noticed that practice two years ago when I travelled as Pax EBLG-LEPA.

Any other Companies use Fwd Lav as 'storage' instead of its intended use???

Never smelt the bogs on the 321 flightdeck, in 8 years. Must be a technical issue with the aircraft you fly, or your picking up pax with dickie stomachs.

Using the lavs as a storage area is not unique to Thomas Cook!! OOH thr shame!!:yuk:

EGGW, you'd be lucky if the stench of a rottening scunk got past your sweet scent. Don't be so pompus, I can vouch for the smelly toilets on the very same aeroplanes you fly, I guess it just what you are used to.

Lock the bog from outside if it bothers you but may be due to a deflecting oe leaking air vent gasper??

Write it up and see if the Engineers reproduce it! Bet they will. I quite often sit n think in their loo.

I have flown both and agree with Chalky, the 737 is infinately worse.

Just think of the poor cabin crew then, who by design have their gallies next to most toilets, and often have the door swiflty shut beside them all flight:yuk:

I think the 'y' DC-10 toilets are by far the worst, tho 737 toilets do get very desperate if not serviced regularly/ on a long sector:bored:

Further to ORAC's post....... it will in fact be a one MOL Euro slot,but only available to debit card bookings made at least 4 weeks prior to flight with a planned use time.No allowance will be made for late arrivals who will have to buy the MOL Euro token for 15 Euros, and of course disabled passengers will have to use their own port-a-potti or pay the destination handling fee for use of private facilities.
Yes I've noticed the smell in most types I've flown in as passenger,but the worst was the notorious BA "curry bowser" from Bombay to Heathrow boarding at Muscat during the mid 80's.

I can vouch for the stench on the 737 but on the 320/321 have never noticed the problem. Maybe it's 737 first officers and nothing to do with toilets at all........!!!;)

From a ground school memory of long ago…….before the mandatory requirement for smoke detectors in lavs, the “poor mans” smoke detector was to route some of the air from the lav to flight deck……

Trying to remember which aircraft school….I tend to “flush” old airplane systems from memory when learning a new one.

Try carrying a load of Canucks home from a 2 star all inclusive in Cuba! Six inches of steel plate couldn't keep the stench from creeping into the front office.

If you are intrested in airborne smell, try flying Armenian Airlines with their big Illyushin.
Even the flies stay away from the aft lavatories.

But your Smelly Hercules lav is well away from your flight deck, is it not? The VC10 K4 has 2 lavs immediately behind the flight deck door - holy whatsits! No fun when the ground crew team have been consuming unmentionables in some godforsaken hole in the middle east!

The VC10 C1K, with one lav immediately behind the flight deck door, and a load of pongos in the back is not fun either! I should add that the C1K also has 2 lavs and a urinal at the rear of the cabin so there is no escape from the problem at the rear of the aircraft either.

While working in Iran I dated a FA from Lufthansa. She told me the following horror story. They were carrying Muslims to and from the Hadj and most of them had never seen a western toilet let alone the types of toilets found on commercial airliners. When they had fully soiled the toilets they picked a spot at the rear of the aircraft to relieve themselves (1 & 2). The smell became so overpowering that the cabin crew went on the flight deck carrying oxygen packs in order to avoid the stench.

When the aircraft returned to Frankfurt they not only steam cleaned the toilets they gutted the airframe down to an aluminum tube. She said it cost more to return the aircraft to service than they made in carrying the passengers.

On a more personal note I flew TWA from Malpensa to New York and the aircraft arrived late. The ground crew did not have enough time to clean the cabin so they took all of the blankets and pillows that had been used by the arriving passengers and piled them up at the rear of the cabin. It didn’t take much time and the rear of the cabins started to smell like the inside of a gym bag.
