UK pilot dies in US parachute accident

An airline pilot from Surrey has died in a skydiving accident in the USA, police in Florida have announced. Martin Siddell, 52, a British Airways pilot from Camberley, was killed in the incident on Sunday. Police said the father-of-three was knocked sideways by a sudden gust of wind which folded his parachute and sent him plummeting to the ground. Attempts were made to revive him after he hit the ground, but he died at the scene. Mr Siddell was making his third parachute jump at the Skydive City in Zephyrhills, Florida, about 25 miles north east of Tampa. A Zephyrhills police spokesman said his parachute had opened successfully at 3,000 feet before the freak gust of wind rapidly accelerated his descent when he was just a few hundred feet from the ground. |
Very sad news. My heart-felt thoughts go out to his family at this time. I am a colleague although did not know him personally.

I cannot express how sad I was when I heard this.
It's just two weeks since I flew with Mart to Phoenix. Whenever I saw his name on my roster, it brought a smile to my face. Always fun......even if you did try and get me to drink something called a "Howling Wolf" A fantastic pilot and star of the party. You will be sorely missed by many many people. So very sad to hear about Martin.
Many people will remember flying 757, with Caledonian in the early and mid-ninties. Then later on with 777 for BA and AML. I am sure we can all recall stories of his "dare-devil" side. Bahrain, Mombasa etc in the fantastic days of the Yellow Dog 757,s. Even today at work (TCX) so many people are shocked by his death. All my thoughts are with his family. I flew with him many times. A sad day.
I will always remember arriving at Tampa to be greeted by Martin in the hotel reception. "I can give you ten minutes to get changed, there is a Midnight Shuttle launch at Kennedy, the car is outside ready to go so hurry up!" He drove us to the Kennedy launch and back! Would not have missed it for the world...Thanks Martin, you were one of the worlds nice guys. |

Sad to see you go. But anyone who knew him would know that this is probably what he would have chosen if it was his choice. Doing what he loved in the place he loved. Living life in the fast lane. Having enjoyed his company many times downroute with his endless fun,drinking games and enthusiastic outlook on life. He will be missed by so many that had the good fortune to meet on a trip. Thinking of Angie and the boys. May he find the thrills he seeked down here, way up there. Definitely one in a million. God bless |
I'm totally numbed by this sad news.
Martin was one of those guys once you'd met, you never forgot. To me he summed up the fun of Caledonian. Those Mombasa and Bahrain trips with him were what the job was all about. He could turn a night Dalaman into a pleasurable trip. His zest for life was invigorating. I only flew with him on the TriStar but you know he was so highly respected on each fleet and crew he was with. We will not forget you Martin. RIP. |
I had the pleasure of a Barbados with Martin last year and I can only echo the thoughts of the other guys here.

I had the pleasure of flying with Martin for my entire career. As has been said, B757, Tristar, DC10 and finally the B777 at AML.
The pleasure of flying with him was immense and he had the respect of everyone he worked with. Deepest sympathies to his wife and children, two of whom I have been on trips with. He will be sorely missed by all. Cheers Martin !! |
As with everyone else, I can only express my sorrow at the news. Over the last week or so my thoughts have turned to Martin's family often.
The only memories of Capt. Siddell I have are good ones. Since leaving flying 1 year ago, I had met Martin a number of times, and enjoyed every minute I ever spent with him. |
