Odd sounding prop
Walking the dog today in Sandhurst (Surrey Hants Berks border)unusual prop sound caught mt attention , nothing as deep as the Antonovs not a Herc or an Atlas, despite clear skies I couldnt see much although there was a smallish aircraft high but no contrails heading SE at about 0900.
It was just the unusual sound that caught my attention, sort of half way between a piston noise and turboprop although i think in both cases its the prop not the engine that makes the most noise. Any ideas? |
FR24 for around 0900 local is showing a Cessna 310R G-FFWD in that area heading south at 10000ft.
|
C310 G-FFWD passed over that area at 10000' heading SE just before 9am.
Diamond Twinstar G-DOSB heading ESE just to the NE of Farnborough at 1300' just after 9am - their diesel engines do sound rather odd, fairly high pitched and rather like those fan-powered airships that were around a decade or so back... looks like it went into Blackbushe. |
Whilst we have the experts to hand what was the unusual prop going over London SW to NE at 11.40 local yesterday (Monday) call sign STQ444 ? Not like the usual suspects ?
|
STQ444 was a Starwings CitationJet D-CKNA which went into Luton around then. Came in via Mayfield and Barkway with a turn over London.
Can't do replays on ADSB Exchange but I did notice a German AF A400M heading west over London at some point yesterday, probably morning - think it went into Fairford. |
Thank you, that's a case of seeing an un-identified aircraft and hearing another and making 1+1 = 3 ;-) What ever prop job I heard was not a hero, nor A400, nor flybe, nor russkie but perhaps something else. Sort of sounded like a P-3, but who knows!

People still don't seem to realise that not all aircraft will show on FR24 or similar because they don't carry the necessary avionoics; military aircraft mostly but many civil ones too.

Here's a Typhoon from a couple of months ago, which obviously wasn't tracking on FR24: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....b85b34940c.jpg Groundspeed 655 kts. :O |
Many thanks as always-I will go for the Cessna 310- wonderful looking aircraft which is god knows how old now. The height and sipped seem about right for what was not much more than a silver dot and I know they have pretty powerful engines but never heard one in the cruise .
I shall have to give web track a try myself to stop bothering some of you most helpful and informative members |
Sorry should be Webtrak

Loud turboprop heard this morning,a quick look on ADS-B showed a German Air Force A400 heading E out to sea between Clacton and Harwich.
|
I find that the A400 has a most distinct sound when flying over unlike any of the other regulars. The Piaggio push propeller being another that usually needs no checking to see what it is.

Cessna 337 as well though I haven't seen/heard one in a long time. There an American one doing a lot of orbits well to the east of Biggin recently, a pic I saw of it showed it be an O-2.

Piaggio never made a quiet aircraft; the P136, P166 and P180 are all pushers and all have a distinctive noise, likewise the Beech Starship.

Course Pax had it been a Britannia, you wouldn't have heard it anyway.

Delete 'scooter' insert 'pansywagon'.
'panysywagon' would be something like that silly little Suzuki 4x4 jeep thing favoured by hairdressers in the 80's, etc. The Audi TT of yesteryear. |
