AF66 CDG-LAX diverts - uncontained engine failure over Atlantic
A380 CDG-LAX diverted to YYR (Goose Bay) after uncontained(?) #4 engine failure over Atlantic. Landed safely 2 hrs later. GP7200 engine and cowling massive damage. No injuries. Photos: SEE IT: Engine destroyed on Air France flight from Paris to LA - NY Daily News

Landed in goose bay? Wow, that will be a bit challenging to find a hotel room for everyone...
|
Perhaps fortunate they were over the sea with the fan detaching, that would make a real mess if it fell on a built up area.
|
AirFrance responded to the incident in a statement saying that the flight had landed safely after a technical issue was identified. "AF66 landed safely. Customers taken care by Air France and rerouting solutions on going." Suuuuureeee.. did not lose the engine - just the fan and cowling- |

What they actually said: "Air France confirms that the crew of flight AF66 decided to divert to Goose Bay airport following serious damage on one of its four engines." Hard to argue with that. |
There is a short video clip of part of the final approach taken from ground viewable in a CBC journalist’s tweet.
Unable to copy It over here but this is the guy to search for - @JacobBarkerCBC ‘Just received this video from Kate Heath of Air France emergency landing in Goose Bay. #yyr #cbcnl’ |
linking to a tweet --- level:advanced (just joking ty for pointing to it)

"Uncontained" doesn't seem quite adequate.

Video of AF landing at Goose bay
A380 is a decent three engine! Reports are of wing leading edge damage and leaking hydraulics. And witless scared passengers. Video of landing :D: https://twitter.com/JacobBarkerCBC/s...00346142154752

Well that puts the Uncontained into Uncontained.. Whole disc has sheared off! No containment shell is going to take that force. Bet Rolls are glad it was not a Trent!
|
Listening to the tower recording, parts were falling off the plane as it rolled to a stop. The fire crew ('Red Leader') was hesitant to approach the aircraft with two engines still turning to retrieve the FOD for further taxi. I'm guessing Goose doesn't have an A380 towbar.
Number one didn't go into reverse on landing. ;) Time to lease a Volga-Dnepr An-124 into YYR? I'm sure the attorneys in first class are passing out business cards to the hoi polloi. |

Local source says passengers still on plane four hours after landing and captain has not asked for local help so no one responding yet.
APU still running. |
Holy crap this could have been so much worse, the entire fan containment case is gone! Looks like the LP shaft sheared off or something.

...I'll find my coat and the way out of here now. |
I could be wrong but a playback on flightradar24 shows the decent from FL370 to FL310 occurred over Souther Greenland so there could be slightly better chance of finding the bits for the investigation. I only say slightly as its still pretty damn remote in that area but better than in the Atlantic.
