Norwegian 787 diversion - "Lucky escape"
 

Irish online news publication, The Liberal, has the headline “Lucky escape” when reporting a Norwegian 787 in flight engine shutdown and diversion to Shannon, enroute from Paris to New York on June 12:

“A Norwegian Air Shuttle Boeing787-800, registration LN-LNH performing flight DY-7019 from Paris Charles deGaulle (France) to New York JFK, NY (USA) with 294 people on board, was enroute at FL380 about 400nm west of Shannon (Ireland) when the crew decided to shutthe #1 engine (Trent 1000) down and declared PAN due to low engine oil quantity. The aircraft turned around, drifted down to FL140, dumped fuel and diverted to Shannon for a safe landing on runway 24 about 70 minutes later.
Other "Aviation Services" reported based on a single unverified tweet without further checks, that the aircraft diverted due to a woman in labour"

Statistically, a longhaul flight with 300 SOB is almost certain to have at least one pregnant passenger on board, so the two scenarios aren't mutually exclusive.

Woman has baby which squirts into engine. Unfortunate, but not uncommon surely?

Two Norwegian 787's have suffered two in flight engine shutdowns (IFSD) in two consecutive months:


May 20 (LN-LND):
Incident: Norwegian B788 at Copenhagen on May 20th 2017, engine shut down in flight


June 11 (LN-LNH):
Incident: Norwegian B788 over Atlantic on Jun 11th 2017, engine shut down in flight

Perhaps this would more correctly be called Rolls Royce Trent 1000 woes. Seems that they are having a lot of problems and may not make money on the engine at all.

"Engine shut down in flight" incidents are hardly rare. Aviation Herald currently lists eight other recent incidents, none of which involves a 787 or a Trent 1000 engine. You could make just as good a case for "woes" of 737s with CFM56 engines.

Indeed, though on the other hand Av Herald always likes to apply its spin too. There's no reason they have to report every incident resulting in a successful landing as a 'safe landing', but they do so for their subtle psychological reasons.
