How to identify what flew over, after the event?
 

Out in the garden this morning hanging out washing (oh, what an exciting life I lead!), a propeller-driven aircraft went over at high altitude (20,000ft+ at a guess), producing an extremely loud, low frequency noise.

Three questions:
Are there still any propeller aircraft that are this noisy all the time in the cruise, or would it just the particular settings it had at the time?

Secondly, is it possible to determine from the internet what the aircraft was after the event? Purely out of curiosity, I should add, as I have no desire to complain to anyone about it. I looked at Flightradar24 half an hour later but that seemed to be real-time only.

Thirdly, if it was that noisy four miles or so below it, what would it be like in the cabin?

If you know how to search such websites, it passed over Farnham, Surrey, at approximately 10:40BST, heading South.

There are quite a few turboprops (A400, Hercules, An22)which operate at those sort of levels and some can be noisy, even a Hercules makes a 'noticeable' noise.
Never heard it myself though and I live ti the north of you so possibly a Hercules or A400 out of Brize?

Nothing obvious on FlightRadar24's replay at around that time.

But that's not altogether surprising - most heavy prop aircraft aren't equipped with ADS-B, and so are more difficult for sites like FR24 to track.

Flight radar 24 does have playback, look for a anti clock wise circular arrow with the hands of a clock on it. Remember the replay time is based on UTC

Some of the ex Russian machines are a touch noisey.

This particular aircraft woke me up when it flew over Staffordshire, and I have double glazing.

If Chevvron didn't notice it, maybe the noise was made worse in my particular case due to brick walls on three sides and a wooden fence on the fourth. Perhaps the back garden was acting like a crude version of those concrete listening dishes on Romney Marsh?

I noticed a US Navy C-130 heading SE towards Worthing this morning, not sure what time it was, but probably around then.

It was the USN C-130 that Treadigraph mentioned which left Aldergrove at around 09.40 and was on :- https://global.adsbexchange.com/Virt...r/desktop.html

There was a Cavok Antonov 12B (UR-CNN) flying from North Africa to London Stansted sort of around that time? But I see that the track was a fair way to the east of Farnham and it was going north.

Thank you everyone for the replies and an education in flight tracking. It certainly seems that Treadigraph and Big Eric are on the money, although I can't see a way of playing back ADSBExchange to follow this flight after the event.

I did wonder about an AN-12 after Council Van's post; but as has been pointed out, they were going the other way.

Those early model C-130s must be responsible for a good amount of hearing loss.

Even though the C-130J has been in service for nearly 20 years, there are a surprising number of the original T56-powered variants still in service.

Though yesterday's C-130T was a relatively rare example, with only about 20 of those having been built for the USN.

I'm just up the road, and heard that. I expected to see an AN22. There were two Hercs in succession on very similar tracks. Using adsbexchange.com I identified them as follows: The first, which passed Farnborough at 1044, was 165378, 1997 Lockheed Martin C-130T Hercules, C/N: 382-5429 operating as CNV3810, and the second passed Farnborough at 1103, a Royal Canadian Air Force CC130J 130602 operating as CFC2569.

The noise signatures lingered louder than usual, and for for a long time, presumably something to do with the wind at the time.

Sadly it doesn't have a replay facility, but you can use the filters to remove all of those pesky civvie flights and just see the military. ;)

The A400m has a distinctive noise. Several a day over Northampton in last 2-3 weeks. We're on a track out of Brize towards mainland Europe and used to get VC10s and TriStars (and bombers too during Yugoslavia and Gulf conflicts) on similar tracks.

The 400m doesn't usually show up on FR24.

My guess is recent ones were associated with NATO moves in Baltics.

Doesn't it just? They show up on ADSB Exchange. IUsually over here somewhere around 20000 either inbound or outbound Brize, but one went over at about 8000 the other day, suspect it was going into Northolt - missed seeing it in close up (leave back door unlocked!).

Sitting in front of my pc the other day I heard a low pulsating growl, flicked onto FR24 which showed a Cavok Air AN12 enroute to Algeria. It was at 20,000ft, how noisy are they inside ?

I've not flown in the An-12, but I have in the Il-18 (which has the same engines).

It was a long time ago, but I don't recall it being particularly noisy, certainly no worse than the Vanguard was.

The 12 is not too noisy when you are in the pressurised capsule at the pointy end. (The freight bay is un -pressurised, so it is preferable to be in the capsule.:O) I equates the sound level as similar to the C130K round about the para door area. Nice and cosy in the An12 when all 10 of us were in the capsule........ The An22 was similar in the air if you were on board, but on or from the ground, the noise was H O R R E N D O U S. Similar to the 12, pressurised crew capsule and un-pressurised freight bay. Enjoyed my time with them.:ok:
