Help understanding this article about fares, please

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/ar...nalyst-435838/

It says AA have introduced a "basic fare" and that as a result "economy fares increased 117% and basic economy fares just 16% ".

Does that mean that the introduction of a "basic economy fare" has meant that an ordinary economy fare has risen from say $100 to $217?

Or that where they used to sell 100 economy tickets they are now selling 217?

Either way it looks far too good to be true, from the airline's POV.

And then it goes on to say that once AA's fares had sold out, the competing airlines matched those fares. Why would that be? I would only match them as long as they were on sale.

Do I fail to understand because I am not an airline professional, or is the article badly written?

No, what it means is that once AA's no-frills "basic economy" fares had sold out, competitors only needed to match the regular economy fare.

I agree that it's not very well written.

Sometime ago I was told that no two passengers on a flight paid the same fare! I guess that might have changed now.
