EVA air continues operation despite typhoon

Typhoon Megi hit Taipei last week. But that didn't stop EVA air, as they continued operation into Taipei.
All other airlines ceased operations. Taiwan's CAA started an investigation. Here is a metar from that day at the peak of the storm:

RCTP 270630Z 03062G86KT 0800 R05L/1200N R05R/1200N +SHRA FEW005 BKN008 FEW015TCU OVC020 26/24 Q0979 WS ALL RWY NOSIG RMK TCU SE-SW A2893

If we are in ruors let me highlight one point. The nature of gusts in storms are different than under normal conditions. Normally gusts going on top of the avarage wind. Reasons are termal lift etc. But in storm pressure gradients are so strong, not allowing higher velocities of wind. the reason for variation are frequently generated vortexes. For this reasons gusts in storms are always negative.
Thatswhy a correct wind report should readed as RCTP 270630Z 03086G62KT, not RCTP 270630Z 03062G86KT.

Typhoon Gusts

rak64. I find your post very interesting. In all my 50 years plus in aviation, I have never heard this. My tropical flying was always very equatorial, so typhoons never bothered us – only flying lead! I can see some sense in what you say and one is never too old to learn. Is this a received wisdom?

Rak64 :

For this reasons gusts in storms are always negative.
Did not know this either . Thanks . So in this case, you set speed against the wind, then suddenly the gust makes the runway look very short ... Interesting !
