Hawker Hunter - How many operational in UK?
Prior to the recent Tragedy at Shoreham, how many Hunters were operational (both Civilian and Military) in the UK?
And does the CAA directive apply to those in Military use? PZU - Out of Africa (Retired) Condolences to ALL affected by this Tragedy |
Prior to the recent Tragedy at Shoreham, how many Hunters were operational (both Civilian and Military) in the UK? Fifteen on the civil register, of which around half are currently operational, I believe: https://www.caa.co.uk/application.as...AWKER%20HUNTER |
There are four Hunters flying with Hawker Hunter Aviation at Scampton, undertaking assorted tasks on behalf of the MoD, often for the Royal Navy. All are operated on the military aircraft register, and as such should be exempt from the CAA ruling.
Three are ex-Swiss F.58s, serialled ZZ190, ZZ191 and ZZ194, and the other is T.8B XF995. This latter aircraft has previously been civil registered as G-BZSF, but was transferred to the MAR in 2007. |

As a strange aside, a friend was watching hunters flying around only the other day in Hawaii and told me about them as he was so surprised. Apparently they are part of a stable of ex-Swiss AF aircraft seemingly doing military training contracts for the US Navy. Next day was Shoreham and fate was the hunter :(

Close, but no cigar ;)
These were US registered with 'AX' at the end of their registrations and the company had 'Hunter xxxxx xxxx' as it's name. SHJ |

There's one (2 seater) in Woking town centre but it's definitely non operational as it's on a pole outside a nightclub.

Nice atmospheric shot of it:

In certain light you can just make out the airframe number under the paint.
Next to it is a Martian War Machine from 'War of the Worlds', written by HG when he lived in the area. |
