HELP
 

Can anybody help me please, I have found and dusted down my Yupi MVT-7100, replaced the batteries and started to monitor movements around the skies of my home.....but now, I cannot receive anything, not even squelch is heard....can anybody out there tell me what I have done and what I need to do to get monitoring again....my scanner is set for AM and I am using step 12.5 when searching.

If you're in London (as your location info suggests) can you i/d a frequency used by an ATIS or Volmet service, ie something transmitting 24/7/365, and tune to that?

Should allow you to confirm the unit as actually working?

Squelch is a function, not a sound, although I think I know what you mean. If you are hearing no hiss or any noise from the speaker when the radio is turned on try plugging in an earphone. Does the light work? Presumably the dial readout is OK? If all else fails it's time to open your wallet!

From memory some of the Yupiteru scanners were susceptible to capacitors failing after a number of years.

I can't remember what functions that affected but it might be worth a search on Youtube for any how-to-fix-it guides.

Thankfully my VT-225s keep chugging.

My wife bought me this as a present, guided by my enthusiast brother.
Hated every moment of using it, it died and I was so happy.
Unusable, unreliable, incomprehensible.

Yes there was a usability threshold beyond which the basic radio functions were subsumed into always-on scanning.

On my radio I just punch-in the new frequency and hit Enter. A colleague with a new Uniden has to flap around with persuading the radio to stop 'scanning', enter the new frequency and be careful not to touch any keys because that will cause it to merrily abandon the frequency and go off scanning something else again...

Try plugging in an ear-piece or an external speaker, if that doesn't work then you need a new capacitor I'd say.

Problem is, there are many capacitors and a lot of other bits too which could produce the same problem.

My 7100 also had a similar fault and also randomly resetting itself. For a while I could just give it a sharp tap/hit to the side and it would spring into life. Unfortunately even this doesn't help mine these days and so resides in a drawer.:sad:

..... into the bin, but careful you don't break your foot! so wear the toughest boots you have and enjoy the sensation as it shatters, after wasting £200 and hours & hours of frustration.

Well, for all those who are unhappy with their Yupiteru MVT-7100, please remember that they came out in the late 1990s, so even the youngest ones are over 15 years old. Just because you bought it 5 years ago does not mean that the thing is 5 years old!

If you're still not happy with it, and it's still lying in a drawer unused, then maybe I can help you convert it into some cash. I'd be happy to discuss buying your old '7100 (or '7200, but not '7000). I'm always on the lookout for these, I can use them for parts to repair and refurbish others.

I'd second Geezers' post. While a bit old-tech, these are very effective scanners and in good condition they still command respectable prices in Internet auctions. I have two and even on the standard antenna supplied they pull in the signal from aircraft and ground stations quite strongly.
