Possibly a case of Alzheimer's but how can you, or should you, stop the elderly flying as pax ?

Elderly people should never be stopped flying and no should anyone be stopped based on their physical needs. However the line must be drawn when just at the start of a long oceanic crossing a crew member is physically assaulted. Crew don't sign up for, nor do they get paid anywhere near enough to put up with it.

What happens once you're on the ground is not up to the crew/airline. If the passenger was arrested then that needs to be taken up with the local authorities.

I'm sure she didn't mean to do this, and I sympathise with her somewhat but I think the crew did the right thing. They had no idea of knowing what would happen if they continued.

I see it is your first post and I hope it is your last.

As a 75 year old I can confirm that some elderly people can be very aggressive and cause trouble. I have seen it happen on many occasions, they see to think because of their age they can do whatever they like.

Age should be no protection for loutish behavior. It might be the case that she was drunk or a flight attendant served her nuts in a bag and not from a bowl. Also if she was traveling in first class she might well have had an attitude problem.

Roll of duct tape, 5 dollars.
Diversion because of a 79 year old woman, 100's of thousands of dollars.

This is the point. Tackling a drunk and disorderly rugby player is one matter. They proably won't even remember the incident by the time you've landed. Grab an old geezer the wrong way and break their hip, you'll never hear the legal end of it. I know a few people in the elderly care business. Even gentle passive restraints can cause injury when 'fragile' people struggle against them.
