747 freighter loses flap on descent into FRA
 

A large part of an airplane said to be a 747 flap has been found in the woods surrounding Frankfurt airport. According to media reports, the flap has been lost by a Korean Air Cargo freighter plane (a 747-400F) while descending into runway 25C a week ago. Korean Air confirmed an incident without disclosing details. German authorities are investigating, also no details.

KAC suffered a similar incident around 15 years ago, although on that occasion the departing flap section also punched a hole in the rear fuselage of the -200F involved, on approach to Penang.

Surely that's Kuwait Airways Corp - even though they operated -200's I don't think they went to Penang, nor operated -200F's come to think of it.

After all your great insights and comments on so many threads Dave perhaps a typo has crept in on this one.

KAC short for Korean Air Cargo not Kuwait Airways Cargo me thinks so no finger trouble. KAC also lost a B747 at STN if my memory serves me correctly.

Some posters use the ICAO or even IATA designators for airlines, whilst others use their more colloquial identities. That can, and has been, the cause of confusion on these forums from time to time.

For avoidance of doubt, yes I was being lazy and using KAC to refer to Korean Air Cargo (the previous incident also involved a freighter), and yes I'm aware that their ICAO designator is KAL. :ugh:

Ask Cathay Pacific about the flap from one of their 747s that landed at Chek Lap Kok. The new airport wasn't open, they were inbound to Kai Tak when it fell off and landed smack on the runway numbers!
