Flying and Music

Hey guys, question; what are the rules regarding listening to music in the cockpit? I am not a pilot (one day fingers crossed) but more than frequently log FSX hours and I find that some good music not only helps liven the lull times but are also great for difficult approaches etc. anyone know what's allowed in reality and if allowed how it is done? thanks

In my experience, never done, called unprofessional...one needs/requires their full attention focused on the job at hand, ALL your senses are required, visual, aural and situational!

Your theory was proven correct in the movie Iron Eagle released on January 17'th of 1986. Rock on!

So you have never tuned the HF or ADF to a radio station?

Thanks for the replies, I know i've seen a cockpit shot somewhere with an ipod hanging/around the glare shield area.
@grounded good one, saw and loved it as a kid, watched again few years ago, was disappointed.
@ecam live close to KBFI and often have ATC streaming on computer. Drives my roommates crazy :)

What about cruise on 10hr+ flight? Wouldn't it be similar to reading book/magazine or using laptop/tablet device?

What about cruise on 10hr+ flight?
Probably the only time it is "allowable" is on long overwater sectors but even so only if it's co-ordinated in a similar manner to controlled rest/controlled napping...i.e. one pilot monitoring the ship and ATC, allowing the other pilot to go "off watch" for a short while.

:ok: Problem is finding anything audible or worth listening to at 50 west or east.........

Many years ago there used to be a very powerful station transmitting from Moncton(?) on 550 kHz. During the hours of darkness its range extended from Boston to Newfoundland, say an hour or so in a 767. Non-stop oldies. Not that we ever listened to it, of course.

Page in my clipboard had all the radio stations for Europe - listened in most of the time during cruise except around sunset when the signals would get scrambled.
On long haul had an early Walkman tape deck when out of range of ground stations.
Mate had a cd player on a big Boeing glare shield and accidently flew across Switzerland without any contact.
Flown glider aeros to KLF....and paraglided to garage music - but difficult to hear the vario..:ok:
