training bonds

I have a friend who was employed in January 2011 and trained on a Beech 1900. It was her understanding that a two year bond existed, but I have since heard that these may be illegal to impose. She is thinking of leaving in June for a job that takes her to the next level in her flying career. After 18 months of working for this company is is likely that there will be any bond left to pay, and if so can it be enforced - would appreciate some advice - thanks

Depends on who the next employer is and if references are required. if her present employer wants to dig their heels in they will, the future employer won't look kindly on it either. Legal they may not be but they are generally enforced on a gentleman's agreement between airlines.

She signed a 2 year bond of which there is 6 months left (It should be 1/4 left) to pay. Aviation is a small world, be warned.

Definitely she should not walk away, that could stick with her for the rest of her flying career. Best approach, go to the office and talk, they may ask for 25% of total or they may be open to negotiation for a lower amount, either way she can ask for time to pay and agree an installments plan.
