777-200LR - Greatest Passenger Plane Ever Made?
 

It's certainly one of the most recent designs. The 747-8 looks very nice, but the range of the 772LR cant be beat, except by a PBY I guess, and it doesn't boast any Pacman sidesticks or EADS HAL-9000s either. Is the 777-200LR the Greatest Passenger Plane Ever Made?

Commercial Aircraft are made to make money.

I fly all current models of the 777 and the 200LR/200F are by far my favorite to fly...

BUT the 200LR is not a big money maker.

As range increases, yield reduces so you need more payload (in this case passengers) to be profitable.

Long range/ small cabin is NOT a good commercial mix, so the 200LR is rather a "Niche" aircraft use on a few long, thin routes to maintain a network, not necessarily to make money in isolation.

The 300ER is a much bigger money spinner, and all future development of the type is centered around new versions of it.

The 200F, however, is a remarkable aeroplane with quite breathtaking economics- and is just as nice to fly!!

When I did airline business management at uni, one text book said that an airliners yeild increased aswhere the payload/range number increased.

So my understanding was that 1 X 6000nm sector made more money that 6 x 10000nm sectors, I'd assumed it because of the lesser numbers of cycles, charges etc.

Now I'm confused.

Well that's red rag to a bull for any current 747 pilots reading it.....

Anyhow "greatest" using what criteria?

Range?
Economy?
Passenger Load?
Ability to Lift Freight?
Flight deck Ergonomics?
Passenger comfort?
etc,etc, etc.........................................................

Call me old fashioned young man ;), but the greatest passenger aeroplane ever made was the Douglas DC-3, which is why they are still flying around today and have out lived many younger types which you no longer find flying anywhere, let alone commercially.

Greatest noise inside the cabin, maybe ..... :)

(It seems Boeing need to have a word with Airbus on how to suppress this).

I think that the 747-8 is a very nice aircraft, probably the most beautiful. But for a flying cigar/dart? The 777 - 200LR looks awesome.

The range of that plane is just awesome. Is the 300ER better than the 200LR in other respects, or is the 200LR better but only in range?

Certainly the 200LR is newer, isn't it? Released 05? I remember flying one in 07/08 thinking "What a nice new looking plane!" not realizing just how new it was.

In comparison, the Airbuses just look plain ugly. The Fokkers and MDs look better.

And so the day has come when we become airliners.net :(

I am looking to fly in a B777-200LR this summer and it should be good. However if someone were to offer me a switch to Concorde or a VC10, I think I might enjoy it more.
It's like asking which one of your kids is your favourite when you try and says what's "better" between the B747 and the B777.....

The MD11 I assume? The MD80 is aesthetically a DC9.

That's a complete generalisation, an evening at LHR shooting the evening A340s and A330s arriving from Asia is a beautiful place to be. Thai Airways colours on an A345 anyone? South African A340-200s?

All very subjective to me Airbus have some nice looking planes, agree with SOE about the A340. I have to say the 777 has never personally been a favourite of mine.

I love the 200LR, but Wiz is right, the 200F is AWESOME!!!!!:D

The A340 isn't a bad looking aircraft, and has interesting flattened intakes, and an interesting nose etc.

The 777-200LR however is remarkable in its range, the speed is almost that of a 747. It's a nice ship!

747 is also was certainly the greatest aircraft ever made, at least for about 20 years, perhaps it still is.

DC-3 sure was.

SR-71 also a look in.

From a passenger point of view I love the monstrous GE90's on the 777,
But based on looks at passenger comfort give me any day A346 :ok:

There is no way you can ever decide on a "greatest" passenger plane. You would have to compare planes from different eras, each of which had to make best use of the available technology. Even with relatively modern passenger planes how can you sensibly compare a 777 with the best business jets?

Different planes for different jobs.

On looks terms Super VC10 and Concorde remain best in my view, closely followed by Caravelle and Comet. A DC3 also qualifies as a plane which "looks right".

If you mean the best in terms of safety, then the Handley Page HP 42 has arguably about the best safety record statiscally, which is pretty astonishing when you consider the available materials and technology of the time.

just to be pedantic , but is the 777-200LR the longest range airliner ? Only with aux tanks in the hold . Did they get certified ever ? As my knowledge of them with one operater is they were never used and then removed.

Of current flying regularly it has to be the B52

The B52 certainly is a great "passenger plane"; no need to land at airports, just open the bomb bay doors and let the passengers jump out: "We're over my home now, can you drop me off here please?"!
