Air France - AFR008, F-GZCO, CDG-JFK Squawk 7700 Now
 

AFR008 bound for New York has been holding for some time at the french coast line and seems to be returning to CDG. Squawk is emergency 7700, any news what is going on?

How come squawk 7700 for a minor technical problem?!

No idea, but it obviously came up not long after take-off. If your on twitter send the press office a tweet, doubt they'll send much more than they have though.

Due to a technical incident, flight AF008 has returned to Paris.
Flight AF008 is delayed due to a technical incident.

I believe there is a time difference in interpretation by the crew of a conditions requiring squawk 7700 and the initial later interpretation of a undescribed "technical incident"

One is between the crew and ATC to ensure safe flight and other is after everybody is safe and the problem now being addressed on-the-ground.

Just everyday management folks, nothing to see here, so let's move on :)

Took off currently just off the coast of Ireland.

Why circulating so long?
 

If a minor problem why circulating for almost an hour with so many passengers?

Burn off fuel?

Bjan9, they may have wanted to troubleshoot the problem or to burn off some fuel. Whatever, ATC will have prefered them to hold over less crowded airspace, as opposed to the very congested airspace around Paris.

With the fuel still on board, they would have been too heavy to land.

No need to wreck the landing gear for a minor problem.
