Unusual turboprop single at STN
Here's one for the Spotters around Stansted::)
Seen on Saturday pm while taxying in: an unidentifiable/unusual blue and white, turboprop single parked in the Compass Swing Bay. Looks like a research or Experimental aircraft, small slim fuselage but long slender wings (estimated at about 50ft span, high-aspect ratio) and large, tall fin/rudder. The type of layout for high altitude or very long range flight. Engine looks to possibly be a Garrett (Honeywell) unit and 4-blade prop with blades in ground fine pitch (hence the engine guess). Tricycle Undercarriage with mains retracting into pods in the wings. Any info, I'm really curious!;) Newgen Jock |

That was going to be my guess, was wracking (what´s left of) my brain.
Thinking of high altitude research aircraft. Grob D-500 Egrett II |
Thanks guys and well done DC 5........... I've finally managed to find it through my son and t'Internet........
Confirmed Grob G 520 Egrett 11. Couldn't definitely say whether it was the (only?) 2-seater ( 520T) as didn't get the reg. Not just 50-odd ft wingspan, more like 103ft! Really interesting and unusual subject to have seen, & (the type) holds a number of world records............... N-G Jock |
It was N520DM s/n 10004
if that helps,departed Monday (19th) ,i think to Italy,but not 100% sure G-ANPK |
One of the ugliest aircraft I have ever seen I think. Had to ask ATC what it was, and they told me it was a Grob Egrett. Googled it since and I now understand what its purpose is/was. Still think it's ugly though........
