Lifts in Aircraft

As a student I cleaned planes at Dublin airport during the summer holidays. I very vaguely recall on one occasion being sent out to collect rubbish from a widebody that had come in from the US.
Now perhaps I am totally imagining things but I think the forward Galley had small "lifts" that would take the rubbish down to the hold. I'm nearly sure one of my smaller colleagues could fit in and actually go down to the hold from the Galley.
For some reason I think the aircraft may have been an MD11,DC10 or L1011 (think it was a tristar)
I also remember popping into the cockpit to ask the skipper if he needed anything and recall clearly that the cockpit was bloody big! A lot bigger than A330's for exmaple.
Could someone put me out of my misery and either (a) identify the aircraft or (b) Tell me I'm imagining things and to go have a lie down!
Thanks a mil
AGOW

Lifts are very common in many wide bodied aircraft.
