Bleed air 1963 - 2009 RIP

Bleed air was first used in 1963 on the Boeing 727.

It was dumped on 15th Decemebr 2009 as being too risky. Congratulations Boeing!

what happens on a first flight like this?i notice they didnt bring up the landing gear, why is this?

Honeyman 15th Dec 2009 22:25

keeps it simple.. don't want to risk it not coming down!

mary meagher 15th Dec 2009 23:04

Interesting to see those wings flex - reminds me of the early carbon fibre gliders, but then the gliders didn't have a couple of RR jet engines hanging on the wings.

deScally 15th Dec 2009 23:13

Beeeeaaauuuuutiful! :D I love the clean lines and lack of ugly vertical winglets. Apologies to Bus drivers but the 787 makes the A380 look butt ugly in comparison!

Rush2112 16th Dec 2009 00:27

SLF here: what a beautiful looking plane. I have to agree with deScally, the 380 is an amazing bit of kit, and I have flown it a number of times and it is a great plane to fly on, but it is one ugly mother!

Merlins Magic 16th Dec 2009 01:50

Have to say that the lines of the wing on rotation looks amazing.

Great to see the landing was in the right spot, unlike the A380 that used half the runway to get the nice landing. Great job.

Amazing news :D

850 orders already, any chance for me to fly it in the future? :) ;)

Turbavykas 16th Dec 2009 06:52

Hi

Just short question! For me the engines look so close to the ground. Won't it be difficult to land in the windy conditions?

korrol 16th Dec 2009 10:18

Rolls Royce Trent 1000s

Those British engines (hooray!) were so quiet what sound they made was pretty much drowned out by the helicopters and the T33 chase planes.

It might have been the camera angle - but did anyone else think those T33s looked a bit too close for comfort - especially on the landing?

Turbavykas 16th Dec 2009 10:49

There is one video on boeing site where mechanics close the engine laying on their backs on the ground ! Boeing's New Airplane
It's no more than 50cm. It's like in a car!

The Boeing PR johnny who commentated live on the (Ba)Dreamliner's first flight deserves congratulations for managing to omit even the merest hint that the event was two and a half years late.

Non Bleed Airconditioning

Did the new (old) pressurerization/airconditioning system work as expected?

bearfoil 16th Dec 2009 15:56

DC-ATE and I want to know if the gear was cycled? Did they stow the training wheels?

Graybeard 16th Dec 2009 16:15

In the post fright press conference, the pilot reporting retracting the gear, then being relieved when they extended it again. Sound like they cycled the gear twice. Cloud prevented them from doing a lot of the scheduled tests.
