Spending around a week end of may around Sth Ca. and wanting to know some muesums / shops etc around LA........ Your suggestions welcome!

Chino!

Fantastic airfield with the Planes of Fame/Fighter Rebuilders museum and I think the Yanks museum is also still there though they were going to move at some point. On the eastern side of the LA conurbation, due south of Ontario.

March Field is a little further east and has a good base museum on the western perimeter of the airfield, also another good museum is at Palm Springs Airport further east still.

Look 'em up; I visited them all about ten years ago and was most impressed.

Planes of Fame have occasional airshows - worth trying to coincide with one if you can.

Chino - YES, if you don't mind driving a bit. Closer in, John Wayne Airport is a great place with some very interesting aircraft beside the hundreds of "clockwork mice", airliners and biz jets.... like this, for example:

Chino is excellent. If you're willing to drive greater distances, the air museum in San Diego is a fine example. Also, you can go up to the desert yards at Victorville and Mojave and see quite a lot from public areas. Long Beach may also be worth a drive-by - you never know what might be there.

When I was in San Diego several years ago I was like a kid in a sweet shop. Exploring Guided Missile Cruisers, walking the decks of Aircraft Carriers and then checking Tomcats at Miramar.

Probably not as free and easy now-a-days though

Take a quick trip to Palmdale, about 90 minutes north of LAX. On the weekend the Blackbird Park will be open as will the Palmdale Heratage Air Park next door. On static display will be an SR-71, A-12, U-2, F-117, D-21, B-52, most of the century series fighters, A-4, F-4 and a few more.

If the weather is good there is normally something making touch and goes at Air Force 42 (Palmdale Airport), if you really lucky maybe a B-2 or U-2.

It looks like Chino and Palmdale at least worth the visit! I not on the map the Edwards is not far from Palmdale, is it worth driving a bit further or are the chances of seeing something interesting are remote?

Also, any good pilot shops, or are we all banished to online shopping now?!?!?! :}

Yes, some pilot shops which I'm happy to point out. Still, nothing to write home about.

On the other hand, when will you be here? Perhaps a pint?

Both Palm Springs and the CAF at Mesa (AZ) are well worth a visit. Visited both this past week and was very impressed.

Don't know what Edwards has (there is a museum isn't there?), but Mojave is more or less between Palmdale and Edwards. Also Fox Field at Lancaster is just north of Palmdale. Last time I was there there were a couple of fire bombers based, plus a museum including an Argosy no less!

If you do see anything it will definitely be "remote". You won't be allowed anywhere near the base, except on the annual open day in October.

There are two museums in San Diego - USS Midway at the waterfront ('natch) and one in Balboa Park.
