FAA Publishes Numbers of U.S. Pilots

The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Regulatory Support Division (AFS-600) published the following statistics regarding how many pilots there are in the U.S. The grand total is 598,217 pilots. Of these, there are 132,305 airline transport pilots; 120,875 commercial pilots; 255,835 private pilots; 88,857 student pilots; and 345 recreational pilots. Additionally, there are 78,182 certified flight instructors; 1,200 designated pilot examiners; and 400 training center evaluators.

Does anyone know if figures have been published for the UK also? (PPL and commercial)

The CAA do publish such a document; it can be found sometimes on the board on the right (as you walk in) of FCL at battleship house. Otherwise it's tucked away in the library.

Not on the internet though (at least not that I'm aware of). If it is, it would be at the ERG's site: http://www.caaerg.co.uk/ click on 'Download Publications' and have a look through there.

Thanks WX man and Fergi, but what about the FAA rather than the CAA site, I understand that the FAA are actually providing a list containing names and addresses of pilots. I for one had a letter through from the FAA to the effect that if they did not receive a request from me not to include my name on a list then it would be included on a list of US certificated pilots - just wondered if that list was available in the public domain yet!

The Pilot database, along with other databases, have always been in the public domain. They are simply easier to access with the help of the Internet. There has however been some discussion that not all the information may be made public, due to the ability of the unscrupulous to access further personal information from the information provided.
