Its still tucked up safely in 'Dreamland' I'm afraid.

Although I get the impression that Boeing execs
and engineers have had nightmares on-running
for months.

EVERETT, Wash., Jan. 30, 2009 -- Production of Boeing [NYSE: BA] 787 Dreamliners resumed yesterday with the join of the fifth airplane designated for flight test.
This airplane, designated ZA005, is the first to be powered with General Electric GEnx engines. The major assemblies were loaded in final body join over the past several days. The fuselage and wing joins occur simultaneously.
"This airplane signifies our return to a steady production rhythm," said Jack Jones, vice president of 787 Final Assembly and Change Incorporation.
"Sections are arriving in Everett at the completion levels committed by our partners and close to what is expected for mature production," Jones said. "The substantial progress made by our partners streamlines the assembly process, which is essential as we ramp up production."
Five of the six airplanes designated for flight test are now in varying stages of production. Power was restored earlier this week to the first flight-test airplane, ZA001, and production testing has resumed as the airplane prepares for first flight in the second quarter. Rolls-Royce engines are hung on ZA002, in the fourth and final production position in the factory. The third and fourth flight-test airplanes, ZA003 and ZA004, are in the third and second production positions, respectively.
Fastener rework is done on ZA001, nearly complete on ZA002 and progressing well on the third and fourth airplanes, Jones said. "We have applied the resources necessary to complete all the outstanding work on these airplanes and keep the production line moving forward."
Assemblies for the final flight-test airplane, ZA006, are in production at partner sites worldwide. In all, assemblies for 30 Dreamliners are in production at this time.
The 787 Dreamliner has orders for 895 airplanes from 58 airlines.

Thats right. a series of drawbacks on the programs, some supply, technical, quality, certification. Boeing is going all the way.

Still they have a backlog of about 900. Some cancellation during the last few weeks. They are scheduling a flight test program of 9 months which seems undoable to me. I openened a topic on it on tech log.

Thinking about it, wouldn't "Boeing 787 CarbonLiner" be a nicer/ better nickname for the Boeing 787. "Dreamliner" was the name Boeing came up for its succesfull marketing & sales campaigns.

However the dream phase is over, the 787 will soon take to the skies and become the next Boeing day to day transport tool.

Carbonliner is more no nonsense and emphasizing on the uniqueness of the 787. The fact that it is the first full carbon airframe to enter commercial passenger service.

I have a T-Shirt from the Boeing shop (actually I have several), but the one to which I refer, I love. a magnificent print of a 787, in flight, head on....artists impression only of course...the text "787 Premier 30 July 2007"....(Walmart fasteners?) only trouble is I'm too embarrased to wear it...:}...I Saw it (the 787 not the t-shirt) on the line at Everett in March 2008, and really thought then it can't be too much further off........but here we are getting close to March '09....:eek:

I do wish it every success, and to this day think Boeing should have stuck with the 'Shark Fin' tail (Ugly though it was :yuk:) It would have been a visual ID that stuck with non aviation types :hmm:

Now, cutting corners like that always resulted in wing droop on my old Airfix kits! Best to wait for the glue to set and do it bit by bit! :}

I agree that card is misleading. SIA pilots first flew the A380 in 2005, not 2006. The A380 first flew on 27 April 2005.

Or are you implying that SQ pilots were in command of the A380 on its first flight?

Funny, I thought Airbus was involved.

Airbus had 3 A380s flying in 2005 and they did hundreds of hours of flying. SQ pilots participated in that effort. The first A380 to land in Singapore, MSN004 did so in November 2005. :D

The A380 started to replace 747-400s in revenue service in 2007. Did you see the leased A330 commenced revenue service with SQ this year, replacing 777s they purchased ? :confused:

What will be next, A350s replacing 777-300ERs ? :eek:

Any news on when the 787 will get to SQ ? :rolleyes:

SQ is a great company.. but like everybody else. they have to wait in line specially that Boeing has a major backlog when it comes to the dreamliner.:}

now may i ask which A330 series replaced which series of 777 again???:hmm:

744s replaced by airbus 380s... its about time that airbus answers with a big one :yuk:.. 747s been flying even before I was born..fact is even before my eldest brother.:O

don't get me wrong though. I love those 320s and ill always will

So Zeke, remind me again, how much revenue did SQ earn from the A380 in 2005 and 2006. Demo and training flights are fine but that's not what the airplane was created for.

The business card referenced was printed assuming SQ would start earning revenue from the A380 in 2006.

Did that happen?

I hear SQ made a fair bit of revenue off Airbus in 2006 from the A380s. SQs first A380 first flew in May 2006.

You are doing a good job of trying to divert the topic away from the 787 delays, but everyone can see the childish maneuvers are not working. :=

The A380 is flying, has great passenger appeal, and great reliability, all the problems people like yourself flagged have all proved unfounded. This cannot be said about the 747-8 which also should be flying by now.

The 787 has not flown, and will be the most delayed commercial aircraft that I can remember, another wonderful Boeing 787 achievement.:D:D

We do have a couple of nice large-scale models of it in reception though! :O

We can mock the 787 until we are blue in the face but the fact remains that it is the most fuel efficient aircraft ever....as the boeing press-release says they are now onto test aircraft no 5, all with no flight time !!!, this really is the laughing stock of the modern jet-age !!!

In the meantime how many airline are having to use older aircraft whilst waiting for this pink elephant, all adds to the good old carbon footprint !!!

Dreaminer ????? guess its more catchy than the repetativenightmareliner.

As frustrating as the delays to this programme are for the customers and the general world at large, it must be even more so for the manufacturer. They designed and built this aircraft to generate revenue for themselves. At the moment there is far more going out than should be coming in at this point.

The problems to date have largely centered around assembly issues (fasteners and subcontractor build quality) as well as the design and production shortcomings that may only be evident during the assembly process. In these early test aircraft a lot of the "pre-stuffed" items were not included until the later units and this has meant a great deal of deconstruction which has proved to be very time consuming.

There can be little doubt that Boeing want to see this aircraft in the sky and see the customers flying it away from the factory. However, until it is safe to do so, that isn't going to happen. The potential consequence of such unthinkable neglect might be the sort of "Carbon footprint" that makes news for all the wrong reasons!
