The Rescue of Flight 771
Its an old movie, and there have been several threads about it on PPRuNe in the past, but I'm after one in particular (or a pointer to the information)
Someone, somewhere posted an explanation of the mental processes/arithmetic the pilot of the Boeing used to calculate the position of the Cessna. I remember thinking at the time, there is a man with a brain the size of a small planet - it was a lot more complex than implied in the movie. Can anyone point me to a description of how he did it??? |
Rescue of Flight 771
Hi pvmw
There is a detailed description of how he did it in this book Emergency Crisis on the Flight Deck. It details the whole episode and how they managed to find the Cessna. Hope this helps Cheers Donnlass http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg |

Rescue Of Flight 771
I checked out a website about Gordon Vette and it came up with this web address.
It gives details of how the aural box pattern was flown that found him. Cheers Donnlass:ok: http://www.navworld.com/navcerebrations/mayday.htm |
It was a truly spectacular piece of airmanship.

Am I right in thinking Captain Vette got an award for his efforts in this rescue.
As said before an outstanding piece of airmanship. Can't imagine the modern day been counters would be too happy though. Be lucky David |
May I just re-recommend the book "Emergency". I'm currently reading it again and enjoying it just as much the second time!
