Shock - According to BBC News 24, many planes had to land at Leeds Bradford in strong crosswinds today!!!:ooh:

There was a video shown on ITV News tonight, showing what looked like an Embraer 145 landing at a "North East" airport. It WAS pretty wild on approach, one of the "best" I've seen, but the guy pulled off a rather good landing. Bet the passengers were a bit shaken up though!!

Flew up north today and got the ATIS for LBA as an alternate, was giving 190°/40G58. Also did the walkaround at our destination and could hardly stand up

I know you professionals see it as just another day, and you have to deal with crosswinds etc but watching whoever bought that Embraer in on the local BBC news, then from the other end of the flying spectrum I stand in awe at your skill.
At least I can decide to leave the plane in the hanger on days like this, but I appreciate you gusy cannot. That landing looked so perfectly executed. I take my hat off to you all :D |

Coming in to land at NCL today, Vref 126kts, some in hand for granny due to -25kts windsheer reported, groundspeed 57kts :eek:

I was SLF flying into EGNT this evening. I wish I had timed how long it took from the coast to the threshold rwy25. It seemed ages and I ain't joking, we weren't travelling much faster that the cars below.
I tried to calculate the ground speed for the last couple of miles and I recon it was around 90kts (Avro RJ85) - wind was straight on the nose which made is a pretty much normal landing. |
Come ooooop north .... way north, and you have conditions like this on a fairly regular basis!!
It puts hairs on your chest ........ even the cabin crew have hairy chests :} |
Not fun in a 145 handfull in these conditions but hey its been like it most of January!

I was based at LBA for five years during the 1980s flying the Fokker F27 Friendship (without doubt, the most dreadful aircraft I flew in my career). I am also an experienced glider pilot.
Leeds suffers from mountain wave effect and the associated rotors. It can be an absolute bast*rd when the conditions favour wave - as was the case on Friday 25th. I managed well enough although did flat spot a pair of tyres on one occasion when pressing hard on the brakes on one side to keep the thing straight after touchdown. The Friendship had pneumatic brakes, so there was always a slight lag between pressing the pedal and the result - it was easy to get out of phase! After the Friendship, the BAe146 which I flew for the final nine years was a real joy in crosswinds and I used to positively look forward to a gusty day. Jack Harrison (retired since 1998) |
Lorkel news showed a longer version of this clip. The longer version showed him nailing it onto the LBA down slope, which just comes into view at the end of the shorter clip. Incidentally the clip was sped up slightly on TV and (I think) so is this, a stupid thing to do!
You can see exactly this view for yourself, if you go and stand in the graveyard at the end of rwy 14. It's only when you see it from the graveyard, that you realise how startling the slope really is! |

Just had the Youtube video pointed out to me... that was us landing lol... well the Captain, certainly not the white-knuckled fo on the rhs...
Brilliant work by the captain there... it was awesome to see from the flight deck. Pretty much all the winds given were out of limits outright, except the last couple of wind checks before da and landing which were on the limit gusting out of limits. The passengers were really grateful to arrive at Leeds as all the previous flights ended up at Doncaster I recall... During the walkround the wind increased again and it was pretty much impossible to stand up. The ground crew were having a rotten time, the baggage handlers looked ready to strike... by the time we were taxiing out again the wind had reduced to just about legal. Pretty torrid year so far though... house windows trying to blow in as I type... Sky |
