Hello all...
Airbus have formally announced a revised A350 - The XWB.
It looks like Airbus might finally have an answer to the 777-300ER and 777-200LR with its A350-1000 and A350-900R :D
More info on the link below- the A350 microsite is a bit empty at the moment but there is a video clip of the new plane.

Seems to me that in the animated video (link above) the aircraft has exceeded its allowable bank angle at one point :)

Is it me, or is there a hint of the 787 in that design?

I know the bank account will be exceeded... :sad:

787FOCAL, The mods didn't move this anywhere ;) .

I started this in Spectators Balcony (Spotters Corner) as it isn't a rumour, and when I previously posted about the proposed A340-600E in Rumours and News, all the replies I got were people moaning about seniority / pay, instead of the proposed aircraft and its merits and I got shouted down and belittled for not being a commercial pilot :eek: . Never again!

I like to think the people who visit this particular forum have a bit more love for aviation, aren't so judgemental, and can discuss this new plane without resorting to a bragging match.

It does look like a 787 though - but I suppose if you do enough time on the CAD systems and wind tunnel / fluid dynamics software the final aerodynamic shape / configuration is bound to be similar. As the 767 / A300 and DC10 / L1011 proved.

I knew I recognised that window shape / layout from somewhere!

Despite it being a copy of the 787 I do still think the A350 looks rather impressive. Especially love the curved wing tips!

What is the status of the orders/LOI that were posted for the original 350?How mny airlines will carry them across or is this a relaunch?

Am I wrong or where these curved wing tips originally also a 787 feature? In the picture pasted above, the 787 has gone back to a more "traditionally" BBJ winglet. Maybe they found out that it was purely looking good without any technological justification...

Still, a good looking beast, especially after the fat uglybus. A generation of these flying around, along with the 787 and the 747-8 isn't so bad for us spotters! :ok:

Yes, I am a Boeing supporter, yet currently fly the 330. Hopefully, my company will take options on the 787...rumor has it that the people up above are seriously considering the Boeing option...I see Airbus as far far behind Boeing technology; the photo of the projected 350 is practically a fotocopy of the 787...Airbus just will not admit they lost the train so they blatantly smother the visiting public at Farnborough with baloney....but they aren´t fooling me.:ugh:

The picture shown is of the 787-3. This is the short range version of the 787 series and its aimed at replacing A300s and domestic 767s. Its lightened and strengthened to deal with higher cycles / shorter sectors. It has a different wing compared to the other two variants because of this.

The other two variants, the 787-8 and 787-9 are the longer range versions (which would likely replace 767-300ERs and 767-400s) and have the curvier version of the 767-400 wing tip. This is also being applied to the 747-8.

Looks to me like Boeing started with an ultra-futuristic design (rounded Shark-fin empenage, rounded wingtips, kink free cockpit nose etc.) and Airbus started with an A330. In the end we will have two more or less identical aircraft right in the middle between these first ideas.
If you look at the latest 787 3 side view, it´s more or less a 767 now (with the not very sexy fuselage shape when seen from the side). The Differences in external layout are small, yet inside it is a total different animal. Whether the new materials will pay off in the long term, we will see.

It´s a little bit like for cars, when they show you designers pictures of the new model, they always look space-age like. In the End you get a more or less conventional car with some fancy plastics fairings. And the composite structures (Matra Baghera, Renault Espace) change to conventional metal within a few years. (Except for the Trabant 601 of course, which was composite until the very end :E )
